Our Story
Since 1991 Rainbow Village, Inc. has offered hope and a future of promise for families faced with a domestic or economic crisis who have become homeless. Rainbow Village provides the necessary assistance and resources for families to stay together in transitional housing while they become self-sufficient. By offering homeless families safe homes and a strong support system, Rainbow Village provides hope for today and the future.
Homelessness frequently breaks up families. The physical and emotional damage, the effect on a child's growth, development and education, the probable separation of family members - all of these disruptive elements can tear a family apart. The paths that bring families to Rainbow Village are varied, but their needs are much the same. A principal wage earner for the family may be suddenly unemployed. A mother flees an abusive relationship with children in tow. A medical emergency depletes a family's savings. Women fleeing abusive relationships are in battered women's shelters often separated from their teen sons. The majority of families who live at Rainbow Village are single mothers receiving little or no child support. Some are single fathers with children. Others are grandparents supporting their grandchildren.
Rainbow Village is a haven for these families - providing a home where they live as part of the larger community and not in isolation. Families that are accepted at Rainbow Village live in communities in the cities of Norcross and Duluth, Georgia.
While living in a Rainbow Village community, families receive much more than shelter. Family assistance, support and development are a vital part of the nurturing and guidance necessary to help these families become self-sufficient. Each family that comes to Rainbow Village works with a case manager and commits to personal and financial goals of self-sufficiency.
Our History
Rainbow Village began as an outreach ministry of Christ Episcopal Church in 1991 and was known as Rainbow House. A generous parishioner provided $25,000 in seed money to begin an outreach ministry for homeless families. These funds and $10,000.00 from Christ Church were used to renovate a home in Norcross owned by the Georgia Power Company. The home was leased for $1.00 per year and converted to a duplex.
In 1995, six additional homes in the same community were leased from Georgia Power and Rainbow Village, Inc. was formed. As a nonprofit corporation, other churches, community organizations, businesses and foundations were solicited for funding and support. Due to the demolition of four of these homes in 2002 the Norcross community is now comprised of four family homes. The demolition of these homes was a mutual decision between Georgia Power and Rainbow Village. RV could not afford the costly maintenance operations and renovation costs of these 50- year-old leased homes. In 1999, a generous gift from Mr.& Mrs. Scott Hudgens allowed Rainbow Village to purchase an eight-unit apartment complex in Duluth.
In 2004, Waterford Homes, Inc. donated a lot to Rainbow Village in one of their subdivisions. David Weekley Homes, Inc. offered to build a home on the lot and donated it to Rainbow Village to sell to one of our graduates. Lynnette Ward, Rainbow Village's Director of Programs and a 1997 graduate of the Rainbow Village program, purchased the home in 2005 and moved in with her three children.
In 2007, a local developer donated 3.7 acres of land to Rainbow Village, which has been subdivided into seven lots for seven future graduate homes. David Weekley Homes, Inc. has offered to build the first home, and is encouraging other builders to follow their example.
